Meekatharra is a small town situated on the Great Northern Highway 760 km’s North East of Perth in the Murchison-East Gascoyne region of the State. The name, Meekatharra, originated from an Aboriginal name for a source of water which was located to the south west of the town. Today Meekatharra acts as a service centre for pastoral stations, established mines and mineral exploration groups in the district.
In December 2008, a new base was built in Perth, transported to Meekatharra and installed at the airport adjacent to the RFDS hangar facilities at the airport. RFDS (Western Operations) medical officers work from the Meekatharra Hospital.
