The Pilbara Development Commission is one of nine Regional Development Commissions established in 1994 by an Act of the Western Australian Parliament. Governed by a Board of Management, it reports to the State Government through the Minister for the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne.
The role of the Pilbara Development Commission is to co-ordinate and promote the economic development of the Pilbara. In its strategic plan, the Pilbara Development Commission provides a comprehensive summary of the initiatives it is currently, and will be, undertaking over the coming years.
These initiatives are listed under the Pilbara Development Commission’s three output areas:
The Pilbara Fund - The Pilbara Development Commission administers grant funding programs for the Pilbara region, specifically the Pilbara Fund. The allocation of funds to the Pilbara Fund was set at $5 million per annum for four years commencing in the 2004/05 year The Pilbara Fund provides an opportunity for the State Government to work in partnership with the Pilbara community to ensure that the region benefits from the State’s buoyant economic position.
The primary objective of the Pilbara Fund is to add to the welfare of all people of the Pilbara and to make the region a better place to live and work. It is intended that the Fund will facilitate the social and economic development of the Pilbara through funding projects that will enhance the long term sustainable future of the region.
Lions Cancer Institute
For nearly 17 years, the Lions Cancer Institute has been providing a unique ‘mobile’ skin cancer screening service to the people of Western Australia – the only one of its kind operating in the southern hemisphere. More than 22, 000 rural and regional people have utilised the free screening service to date.
We’re delighted that through the ‘RFDS on the Road’ Program we were able to facilitate bringing the Lions Cancer Institute’s mobile screening unit and team of volunteers to the Pilbara in 2007. www.lionsclubs.org.au
All Terrain operated 4WD safari tours throughout the western half of Australia for 20 years. During that time, we designed and built our own tour vehicles specifically for maximum passenger comfort and convenience, whilst still being durable and reliable enough for the rugged and often difficult conditions in the bush. We now specialise in low-volume vehicle manufacture, including the custom-design and construction of 4WD tour vehicles, motorhomes, camper trailers and specialised bodies such as the ‘RFDS on the Road’ vehicle.
